U.S. Bombs ISIS Militants In Iraq

CBS San Francisco

WASHINGTON (CBS/AP) — U.S. fighters dropped bombs on Islamic militants in Iraq Friday, the Pentagon said, redeeming President Barack Obama’s promise of military force to counter the advancing militants and confront the threat they pose to Iraqi civilians and Americans.

Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said that two F/A-18 jets dropped 500-pound bombs on a piece of artillery and the truck towing it.

In a televised to the speech Thursday night, Obama had threatened to renew U.S. military involvement in Iraq’s long sectarian war. He said that American military planes already had carried out airdrops of food and water, at the request of the Iraqi government, to tens of thousands of Iraqi religious minorities atop a mountain surrounded by militants and desperately in need of supplies.

“America is coming to help,” the president said in a somber speech from the White House.

The Yazidis, who follow an ancient religion…

New leaker disclosing U.S. secrets, government concludes

(CNN) — The federal government has concluded there’s a new leaker exposing national security documents in the aftermath of surveillance disclosures by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, U.S. officials tell CNN.

Proof of the newest leak comes from national security documents that formed the basis of a news story published Tuesday by the Intercept, the news site launched by Glenn Greenwald, who also published Snowden’s leaks.

The Intercept article focuses on the growth in U.S. government databases of known or suspected terrorist names during the Obama administration.

The article cites documents prepared by the National Counterterrorism Center dated August 2013, which is after Snowden flew to Russia to avoid U.S. criminal charges.

Greenwald has suggested there was another leaker. In July, he said on Twitter “it seems clear at this point” that there was another. Government officials have been investigating to find out who.

The biggest database, called the Terrorist…

Utah officer cleared after he fatally shot dog

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) – An independent civilian review board has cleared a Salt Lake City officer in the fatal shooting of a dog in its own fenced backyard.

Police Chief Chris Burbank announced Friday that the panel found Detective Brett Olsen “acted within policy” when he shot the dog during a search for a missing 3-year-old boy on June 18. The shooting prompted protests and hundreds of emails demanding Olsen’s termination.

A report says Olsen was authorized to enter the yard without a warrant because he believed the boy’s life could be threatened, and he feared for his safety when the dog started charging him.

The boy later was found safe inside his home.

Sean Kendall, owner of the slain Weimaraner, says Olsen entered his backyard illegally and he plans to pursue legal action against the department.

Cadaver dogs assist in Ukraine crash site search

(CNN) — Cadaver dogs are helping 70 experts scour the debris field of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 for remains, according to the the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, which is monitoring the search of the crash site in eastern Ukraine.

Another long day lies ahead, with work focused on the recovery of victims, the OSCE said on Twitter.

Saturday marks the third day monitors and experts have had unrestricted access to the site, more than two weeks after the Boeing 777 was brought down by a suspected surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 people aboard.

Pro-Russia rebels have denied allegations from Ukraine and the West that they shot down the commercial airliner, or that Russia supplied equipment used to shoot it down.

High-level negotiations between Ukraine and the rebels were necessary to allow the team of Dutch and Australian experts and their convoy of vehicles to cross and re-cross…

‘Google Workshop’ may be Google’s Moto Maker for Nexus Devices

Google WorkshopWhen Motorola launched its Moto Maker site, it received a generally good reception; as it turns out, people do like customizing their devices. Other manufacturers have slowly started to roll out services that partially resemble Motorola?s effort to give their customers that little bit more customization, and it looks like everybody?s favourite company, Google, might just be looking to do the same for its Nexus devices with something called ?Google Workshop?.

Android Police dropped the exclusive, saying that Workshop in its current state only caters for the Nexus 5, as an experiment, and offers customization options for custom cases and live wallpapers. And apparently, it looks like this:

There appear to be two main options to customize your Nexus 5: MapMe and Moments. MapMe gives you the ability to adorn your custom case and live wallpaper with a chosen location, and can be further customized to incorporate…

Beloved Wisconsin organization celebrates milestone anniversary

WEST ALLIS (WITI) — As tens of thousands celebrate the dairy state at the Wisconsin State Fair, one group is putting on a show both inside and outside the barns.

Many of the animals being shown at the fair are done so by members of the 4-H Youth Club. However you don’t have to raise animals to be involved in the organization.

“That’s actually a really big stereotype about 4-H. You don’t have to be on a farm or anything,” said member Leah Kasprzak. “I do a lot of arts and crafts and stuff like that.”

Some 4-H members are also part of the Showcase Singers — a group of kids  from around the state who compete at various fairs.

“We work from sun up to sun down, basically,” said director Luke Talen.

“It’s definitely molded me into the person I am today,” said 4-H member Randy Niffenegger.

The organization also…
