NEWS: Urban Fantasy Nerds! Mercy Thompson & Harry Dresden Are Going Graphic! (@Mercys_Garage, @LongShotAuthor)

Someone was feeling incredibly ambitious today! Dynamite dropped four press releases today for the urban fantasy nerd in me, but only two of them really rocked my world.  First on the docket, a brand new, all original Mercy Thompson graphic novel from the brilliant UF mastermind Patricia Briggs!  Second on the docket is two, YES, TWO, new graphic novels from the Harry Dresden world by Jim Butcher!  Although it’s not the first time either series has gone graphic, it’s always fun to learn there’s more on the way.  Also in the mix with these bits of news is Brandon Sanderson and Dean Koontz.  Sanderson’s will be a brand new project called White Sand.  For Koontz, their announcement was actually a deal expansion.  To add to your Koontz collection, you will soon have the graphic novels for Frankenstein, Christopher Snow, and Nevermore.  More details when you keep reading!  I am…

Warm early summer days offer a jump-start for exercise

[ooyala code=”wzeGYzbjo-qhqtehNr74kCSpq7OKEtwC” player_id=”c660b791c3704ff69d4162d7adb7c4a1″]ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – The weather in St. Louis is feeling a lot more like early summer these days, and that means people are heading back outside to exercise. The heat hasn’t been extreme or even far above normal. But for a variety of reasons, it appears some people are trying too hard to do too much too fast.

This is the time of year when Creve Coeur Park is filled with joggers, roller-bladers and runners. Many of them are there almost every day and are already in good physical condition. But, there is also a large group of folks for whom these warm early summer days offer the chance to jump start an otherwise dormant workout routine.

Just yesterday, emergency help had to be called to the park when a woman collapsed while riding a bike.

It’s important to be weather-aware before heading out to run…

Marine Corps League stands for the fallen

[anvplayer video=”280932″ /]

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – It was the normal hustle and bustle of traffic at the busy South Street and Creasy Lane intersection. But on Sunday, there may have been more of a reason for drivers to pay attention.

Members of Lafayette’s Marine Corps League took turns standing at attention.

“My mind is on how hot it is,” Marine Corps League Member Carl Schwamberger said. “It’s not nearly as bad as it was when I was paid to do it years ago.”

Schwamberger knows it is all worth it. For four years, the Marine Corps League has used different holidays, including Memorial Day weekend, to stand for the fallen.

The event raises money for local veterans at the Klinker Veterans Center, and veterans abroad at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

“They do the extra care for the patients the military staff doesn’t have the funds or…

Beyond perfect for the part…

Mark B. Perry

ZeldaAndMBP001RZMay 28, 2014 – The best thing to come out of my year on David E. Kelley’s fantastic Picket Fences wasn’t the career cachet or even the Emmy statuette, it was my deep and lasting friendship with the incomparable Zelda Rubinstein. Zelda was a collector of people, and if she liked you, you were in for life. I count myself quite fortunate to say the first time I met her, she took a shine to me. One of the most compassionate people I’ve ever known, and one of the most wickedly funny, she would call from time to time and leave the most delightful ramblings on my answering machine. We’d see each other every two or three months, usually for dinner at one of her many favorite haunts were she was always welcomed like royalty. Suffice to say that what Zelda lacked in physical stature, she more than made up…

Alabama's Source for Local Coverage You Can Count On

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — The son of a Hollywood director stabbed three men to death in his apartment, gunned down two women outside a sorority and killed a sixth person in a rampage that was foreshadowed by a chilling Internet video in which he vowed to his victims that he would “take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you.”

Authorities said the 22-year-old lone gunman, Elliot Rodger — the son of a director who worked on the “The Hunger Games” — carried out his attacks Friday night in the beach community of Isla Vista near the University of California, Santa Barbara. The rampage happened hours after he looked into a video camera and warned in a disturbing Internet video that he would slaughter those with a good life — especially women who shunned him, authorities said.

Deputies wounded him during two separate shootouts as he sped through Isla Vista, leaving a trail…

Alabama's Source for Local Coverage You Can Count On

DETROIT (AP) – General Motors is recalling 2.4 million vehicles in the U.S. as part of a broader effort to resolve outstanding safety issues more quickly.

The latest action brings to 13.6 million the number of vehicles GM has recalled this year, a new record for the automaker.

The recalls announced Tuesday include 1.3 million older-model crossovers with defective front seat belts and 1 million sedans with a shift cable that can wear out.

GM is also recalling 1,400 new Cadillac Escalade SUVs with faulty air bags.

No fatalities related to the defects have been reported, GM says

It expects to take a $400 million charge in the second quarter to repair the vehicles.

GM agreed to a $35 million federal fine last week for delays in reporting a deadly ignition switch defect.
